Artist’s Statement:
“When I Turn in the Darkness, I Encounter Light” is an experimental art installation that integrates elements of jewelry, installation, and light projection. Through the interplay of gemstones and diverse materials, the work articulates an ecological metaphor that is both delicate and resilient. It centers on the endangered “Light Fern”—a plant that tenaciously grows in shadowed mountain crevices, undeterred by harsh conditions and deforestation, as it extends its leaves in search of light. This act symbolizes the indomitable vitality of nature.
Light is pivotal in this work: the embedded gemstones within both the jewelry and the installation refract and project mesmerizing patterns, as if awakening the hidden “Light Fern” from the darkness. In doing so, the piece not only reflects the artist’s concern for individual resilience but also engages with broader public issues such as ecological degradation and species endangerment.
Furthermore, the public space created by the installation invites viewers to contemplate the interdependence between humanity and nature. It calls for heightened awareness regarding the survival challenges faced by endangered species and, through a diverse range of artistic media, endeavors to inspire a collective commitment to preserving biodiversity. Ultimately, the work serves as a reminder that even in the midst of darkness, we should strive to embrace the light and foster a future where nature’s diversity can thrive.
The installation’s public dimension is designed to prompt reflection on the symbiotic relationship between humans and the natural world, urging proactive engagement with the existential challenges confronting endangered species. At its core, the work explores the interplay between light and life, encouraging us to seek out light amid darkness in order to secure a vibrant future for the natural world.
